Autumn worming for your horse

11 September 2007

This summers wet conditions have been ideal for equine parasites, specifically small redworm. With autumn upon us and the nights drawing in, horse owners should be turning their minds to worming their horse to ensure that all small redworms that they will have picked up during the summer are eradicated.

To eliminate small redworm larvae that have been acquired over the spring and summer, Active3 the three year worming plan from Intervet, recommends administering a five day course of Panacur® Equine Guard, which contains fenbendazole as its active ingredient, in November.  A five day course should then be repeated in February to remove larvae picked up during winter grazing.

For new horses on a yard, regardless of the time of year, a five-day course of Panacur Equine Guard should be given with a double dose of Pyratape P administered on the sixth day, to help eradicate encysted small redworms and tapeworms.

Horse owners should also carry out routine worming during the grazing season, between April and August, with annual rotation between the three chemical groups represented by Vectin® horse paste, Pyratape P and Panacur.
